school overview
The French-English unit at Haeata Community Campus is called L’Aurore. Frenz helped establish L’Aurore and the first class will open in 2025.
Haeata Community Campus is a publicly funded school in Christchurch’s Aranui suburb, just 10 min from downtown and a few minutes from the New Brighton.
Haeata school offers free school hot lunches to all students, and they eat together (in 3 different sittings) in the cafeteria during their lunch break. It is quite different to most NZ school setting, where children eat lunch boxes brought from home either in the classroom or outside. This is closer to the French “cantine” settings. (children are also allowed to bring a lunch box from home if it is their preference, but they must eat at the cafeteria)
Area school
Haeata is an area school, which means that the school caters from new entrants to Y12.
The bilingual programme will welcome students from New Entrants to Y8. Children from all over Christchurch can enrol at L’Aurore and start at any time of the year (the special programme is not zoned).
Haeata was built for 1200 students but only has around 650 students on its roll, which gives the students of Haeata ample space to learn and grow in state-of-the-art new buildings.
Playground sports & culture
Haeata has expansive grass playing fields, and several playground spaces for each age groups, as well as a gymnasium ensuring lots of physical activity opportunities.
Performing arts (music instrument, drama, dance) are offered to Haeata students and funded by the school, a large auditorium offers great opportunities for school productions or other cultural events to take place within the school.
The school also boasts an Art Studio and a Makers Studio (woodwork etc.) that the teachers can book with their classes.
All classes of all ages participate weekly in Kapa Haka sessions.
Haeata operates under the Te Ao Maori principles and the Maori culture is an integral part of the school.
A successful te reo Maori bilingual unit has been running for several years, which gives the educative and leadership team a great understanding of the benefits and challenges of teaching in a bilingual setting.
Bilingual class structure
The NZ curriculum is taught in French (50 to 60% of the time) and in English (40 to 50%
of the time) by a bilingual teacher.
The goal is that children become proficient in both languages in all academic subjects according to their year group curriculum.
Whilst Haeata programme is new, it has been developed by FRENZ volunteer parents from Burnside Primary school and benefits from all the Christchurch French community networking done since 2017 around French bilingual education ( including locally sourcing interns, teaching assistants, collaboration with Alliance Française Christchurch and University of Canterbury French department).
Of course also benefitting from the 30 years of experience from FRENZ nationally.
